Investigate: Before my visit I found out this about the company

Rok is split into 'community' and 'commerical'. They act as a building manageent company who generally act on behalf of clients.
Rok tenders jobs to sub contracters who are responsible for completeing jobs. Community projects are similar but without as many sub-contractors.

Observe: While at the company I job shadowed an Employee. This is what happened:

  • Employee Name:
  • Job Role: Quantity Surveyor

Different levels of surveying. Surveyors seek to cost projects, and manage jobs in terms of cost. Trailing plays a huge part within the job.

Interview: I talked with a member of staff to find out more about their role. This is what I found out:

  • Employee Name:
  • Job Role: Planner
  • Pathway from school to their current position:
Left school and started within the company as a document technician. He then progressed to assistant planner, and attended 'day release'/ 'night release' to gain HNC/HND in the above.
  • Where do they see themselves in the future:

Participate: I took part in a work related activity. This is what happened:

  • Description of task:
  • Notes:

Imagine: From the perspective of a student the advice I would give is:

Be open minded and listen to advice and 'routes' people have to offer them. The jobs within this sector allow 'employees' to be responsible for their own decisions with a lot of trust involved. The would need to be re-enforced to pupils if they are thinking about this sector.

Summarise: The things I have found beneficial from the day(s) in the work environment are:

The days have given an insight into 'tendering' for a job and all relevant stages within a cycle to complete 'jobs'. Employees have been very open and friendly and have allowed me to gain an invaluable experience from all aspects of the construction industry. Site visits allowed me to visualise what pupils would be completing if they worked within this sector and this would enable me to tailor teaching subjects to reflect the working environment.
