Investigate: Before my visit I found out this about the company

60 bed private residential home with a 16 bed EMI unit Part of the Hadrian Group they look after 65+years who are no longer capable of looking after themselves. Residents are means tested and can receive funding from the statutory social care sector.

Observe: While at the company I job shadowed an Employee. This is what happened:

Interview: I talked with a member of staff to find out more about their role. This is what I found out:

• Pathway from school to their current position:
  Care Assistant – Got job from college – no formal care qualification – went through initial induction courses, health and safety, basic fist aid etc is currently following NVQ route in care. Part time at college and works rest of the time in the care home.

Participate: I took part in a work related activity. This is what happened:

• Description of task:
  Laid tables for lunch then took part in activity. Gave teas out and collected in empties. Helped with lunch, moved clients around the building – took part in afternoon bingo then gave out afternoon tea. Set table ready for tea.

Imagine: From the perspective of a student the advice I would give is:

Be open minded I would describe the setting the residents the setting the residents what GMI is and what to expect Advice on personal skills, dress code, type of work involved, what they would do. How they should interact.

Summarise: The things I have found beneficial from the day(s) in the work environment are:

Learning about different types of dementia, the vast amount of policies and procedures.
How the home applies the CVB.
