Our company does:

The Revenue side of the Department collects Taxes.
The Customs side of the Department works at Airports and Posts as Customs Officers.
We employ 100,000 staff in 900 office across the UK

We collect VAT, Income Tax, PAYE, Corporation Tax, Excises duties etc. Last year we collected £480 billion in Taxes.

The main skills you need for this industry are:

Wide variety of skills including Administration, Clerical Management, Tax inspectors, Customs officers, Communications posts, Intranet, Policy advisors, HR managers etc. We also have contact centres for Tax enquiries, tax debt management and VAT registration centres.

A typical day at work is:

Depends upon the kind of work within the large organisation.
Tax inspectors - go out to inspect business records and raise tax bills.
Contact centres open 8-8 giving tax advice, tax debt advice, working family credit etc.
Customs are frontline operational, working shifts at airports and ports.

The advice I would give a young person wanting a career in this line of work is:

Basic level of skills and qualifications are needed to enter the department. Behaviour, skills and ability is what we look for, but the biggest emphasis will be on a persons attitude and behavious and how well they work with others as part of a team.
